New page

This page lists a variety of realworld Email services. The tables primarily denote areas of interest and useability for the anonymous community. We aim to make it the canonical one stop reference for choosing Email providers. (This framework and data is imported and synced with another project. Feel free to edit it.)

These are realworld services. Using them to harass people or break the law WILL cause them to ban anonymous networks, that hurts everyone. All it takes is one bad case. So PLEASE, use them responsibly!

Volunteer what you know

- Take a moment to find a new provider, then fully test and list them.
- Pick a listed provider, then verify that their listing details are still accurate.

Some selection/usage tips

- Source IP addresses - It is usually not desirable to allow the recipient to learn the mail came from Tor (or anywhere else). Those people or use cases might thus discount the authenticity of what was sent. Look at the headers to see if mail claiming to be from a person is in fact from their location. If it's not, it may be suspect. Without an IP, it can't be called either way.
- Doomsday Provisions - Consider creating a stockpile of pristine unused email accounts at the major free providers so that, if they begin barring signups from exits, access to new accounts will still be possible, at least until logins from exits are also blocked. If an account hasn't been used in a while, many providers will mark the account dormant (no mail delivery/storage), or they will simply delete the account. So checking it once in a while might be in order.

Free Mail Services - Traditional Full Service

Minimum criteria for listing in this section:

- Login to at least one method of sending (web, smtp, submission) must be via SSL/TLS/OTP.
- Login to at least one method of receiving (web, imap, pop) must be via SSL/TLS/OTP.
- Must offer both one method of sending, and one method of receiving, for free.

Protocol List
Service HTTP (80) HTTPS (443) IMAP (143) IMAPS (993) SMTP (25) SMTPS (465) submission (587) POP3 (110) POP3S (995)
AOL ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
Hotmail Y Y N N Y f N Y f N Y f
Rambler Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y

Column headings:

HTTPS - Indicates that everything (creation, login, management and use) is available over SSL/TLS, fulltime, natively, no tricks or certificate acceptance required.
xxxxx - The other columns are similarly self explanatory and are hereby omitted.

Notes from the above table:

a - Present but not free, has no known APAY scheme, thus marked N.
b - Possible with HttpsEveryWhere.
c - Works, but uses a self signed, expired, or otherwise deviant, certificate.
d - Gmail has a cleartext session leak with the splash page after signup (welcoming the new user to their mailbox one click away). A password change and log out/in will nullify this.
e - (This table note is available for future use.)
f - More info here: techblissonline
g - Zoho's IMAP returns an odd EXPUNGE response, and pop appears to be nonstandard.
[2] Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y/Y US Y Y Y

Column headings:

SIPW - Source IP appears in mail sent via webmail.
SIPS - Source IP appears in mail sent via SMTP/SMTPS/submission.
SINW - Mail sent via SMTP/SMTPS/submission appears in webmail.
REQE - Requires alternate email to sign up, often used to send activation/recovery links.
UPDE - The address from REQE may be updated later to be the account itself, thus removing the third party.
REQP - Requires phone (SMS/voice) to sign up.
REQN - Requires filling out some name fields (first/last/full), or other PII, to sign up.
FNMC - The '^From: ' "name (GECOS)" field is a single configurable string, independent of the REQN string(s).
NACT - Defaults, or configurable, to not automatically add contacts when sending and receiving mail.
TRAV - Has issues when the exit changes mid session (traveling), or with certain countries/networks in general. This does not include the normal blocking of random exits due to abuse.

1 - Requires the user to log back in to clear things up. Not preventable with the usual 'remember me' cookie/session login options.
2 - Fails to create the account, or fails to login.
3 - Locks the account (requiring helpdesk (human) intervention), or deletes the account.
Note: (1) is usually due to benign software issues. (2) and (3) are usually due to the provider automating their country/network restrictions. (3) is especially bad/unreliable/unpredictable and use of the service is not recommended without MAPADDRESS.

DELE - The account may be deleted by the user.
APAY - Accepts anonymous/alternative payment methods for usage, extended features, or donations. A slash (/) separated list.

1 - Money order
2 - Non-personalized credit (gift) cards.
3 - Bitcoin

MULD - Offers multiple domains to choose from. These are listed on the discussion page.
ADVM - Tags mail body with adverts that give away the MULD parent (ex: when mailing a single recipient from accounts using said domains). Or puts its name in the domain names.
CTYO - Country of organization.
LENG - Language is English by default or configurable as such.
ZONE - Timezone is settable.
DNLD - Messages in the web interface are downloadable to disk via some mechanism.

Notes from the above table:

a - True. Yet when sending via webmail, destination addresses appear in (settings.mail.anti-spam.whitelisted_email). They are deletable.
b - And the headers appear raw, separate from the interpreted body. No way to easily cut/paste the whole thing.

Terms of Service PROHIBITS use of proxies, but tor/proxies are not blocked and no violation of this term has ever been known to get an account flagged. All login attempts (successful or not) create a record of the user's IP address & user agent string!
New page

Security is the degree of resistance to, or protection from, harm. It applies to any vulnerable and valuable asset, such as a person, dwelling, community, nation, or organization. Security provides a form of protection where a separation is created between the assets and the threat. These separations are generically called controls, and sometimes include changes to the asset or the threat.

Contents

1 Choosing an OS
1.1 Operating Systems
1.2 Virtual Machines
1.3 Misc.

Choosing an OS

Your operating system the most important layer in your security model. You should try to test and evaluate all OS's to find that perfect match between security and usability.
Operating Systems

Tails - Tails serves as a pre-configured out-of-box secure OS which can be easily loaded onto removable media. Its ease of use while still forcing a secure protocol makes this OS a great contender. (clearnet link)

Whonix - As with tails, Whonix forces all communication through the Tor network. However, Whonix uses a VM to ensure isolation of the user from the network. As such, it is a little more complex to setup and maintain. Nonetheless, Whonix serves as a viable alternative to the Tails OS for any user who wishes to keep a persistent OS on disk. (clearnet link)

Kali - While not geared towards being out of the box secure, Kali is a powerful tool to exploit network vulnerabilities. This OS comes prepackaged with tools to collect and analyze data in your network as well as having software for anti-forensics. If you have ever wanted to know how secure your system/network is - bombard it with Kali. (clearnet link)

Virtual Machines

VirtualBox - Open source, free as in beer, and compatible with all major OS's there is no doubt that VirtualBox holds the number one spot in consumer VM's. Its robustness and maturity makes it the go to choice for any one who wishes to host a different OS virtually. (clearnet link)

VMware Player - A free to use VM suite that allows you to host any OS on top of your Windows machine. (clearnet link)

VMware Fusion - Fusion claims flawless integration with your OSX machine and will allow you to host any OS on top. Free for trial-period only. (clearnet link)

Misc.

Ubuntu - A how-to guide on dual-booting Ubuntu with Windows pre-installed. (clearnet link)

Kali - A how-to guide on dual booting Kali with Windows pre-installed. (clearnet link)

[ Network Anonymity] - Want to Stay Anonymous?

While the Tor network is great for surfing the Internet anonymously, there may be better suited options depending upon your intended use. For example, the I2P anonymous network. I2P is an anonymous overlay network - a network within a network. It is intended to protect communication from dragnet surveillance and monitoring by third parties such as ISPs.

I2P is used by many people who care about their privacy: activists, oppressed people, journalists and whistleblowers, as well as gori gori pan fula sarkhi shan the average person. No network can be "perfectly anonymous". The continued goal of I2P is to make attacks more and more difficult to mount. Its anonymity will get stronger as the size of the network increases and with ongoing academic review.

I2P is available on desktops, embedded systems (like the Raspberry Pi) and Android phones. Check it out! To learn more about the I2P go to: https://geti2p.net

While using bitcoins is an excellent way to make your purchases, donations, and p2p payments, without losing money through inflated transaction fees, transactions are never truly anonymous. Buying Bitcoin you pass identification, Bitcoin transactions are stored publicly and permanently on the network, which means anyone can see the balance and transactions of any Bitcoin address. Bitcoin activities are recorded and available publicly via the blockchain, a comprehensive database which keeps a record of bitcoin transactions.

All exchanges require the user to scan ID documents, and large transactions must be reported to the proper governmental authority. When you use Bitcoin to pay for goods and services, you will of course need to provide your name and address to the seller for delivery purposes.

This means that a third party with an interest in tracking your activities can use your visible balance and ID information as a basis from which to track your future transactions or to study previous activity. In short, you have compromised your security and privacy.

Mixing service is used to avoid compromising of privacy and security. Mixing services provide to periodically exchange your bitcoins for different ones which cannot be associated with the original owner.
[ Bitcoin Anonymity] - Want to Stay Anonymous?

Anonymity is not a prominent design goal of Bitcoin. However, Bitcoin is often referred to as being anonymous because it is possible to send and receive bitcoins without giving any personally identifying information. However, achieving reasonable anonymity with Bitcoin can be quite complicated and perfect anonymity may be impossible. It is anonymous in the sense that you can hold a Bitcoin address without revealing anything about your identity in that address. One person could hold multiple addresses, and in theory, there would be nothing to link those addresses together, or to indicate that the person owned them.So far so good, but there is another side to Bitcoin. Everything that happens in the Bitcoin world is trackable. Thanks to the way that the algorithm is structured, every Bitcoin-based transaction is logged in the blockchain. If you publish your Bitcoin address on your website, then everyone in the world will be able to know what your bitcoin balance is!

By far the most effective way of preserving your anonymity when buying Bitcoin is to buy with cash using Localbitcoins

Mixing Services

A mixing service is an entity that offers to trade out your bitcoins for ones with a different history. To do this, they essential take your bitcoins and put them in a big pot with bitcoins from many other users. They then send back out the bitcoins randomly to make it impossible to tell which inputs connect to which outputs. While this is effective in theory, to do this with complete anonymity generally requires you to trust an anonymous third party to give you back your bitcoins and not keep records of the transactions that flow through them. There is nothing to keep a mixing service from running away with the coins.

Running your bitcoin-qt client behind a Tor Exit Node

If your running Tor, setting your bitcoin-qt client to communicate through the Tor proxy will help to obfuscate your computer's network IP address. Go to your network preferences and elect to run bitcoin-qt through the SOCKS5 proxy. I use port number 9150.

eWallets or Online Wallets

Web hosted wallets can be used as an effective way of masking the original owner of bitcoins. Many web-based wallet services will lump the bitcoins in their service together, thus often giving you different bitcoins when you withdraw. This only works if this is an active service with other active withdrawals and if you do not make up a significant portion (less than 10%) of the service’s Bitcoin balance. Most web wallets also maintain records of incoming and outgoing coins, so any anonymity gained is fully dependent upon the service provider.
When I was teaching at Wharton, I remember one student who was amazed that he could "wire" his Treasury bill from a bank in Chicago to a bank in Manhattan. Of course there was no mystery to the process. Treasury bills only exist as accounting entries on the books of the Federal Reserve: there is no physical token or quality printed document involved.

The bank in Chicago was the registered owner of the T-bill on the Fed's books, and it simply sent instructions to the Fed to turn the T-bill over to the bank in Manhattan — i.e. to attach the Manhattan bank's name as the owner of the T-bill on the Fed's books. Meanwhile, the bank in Manhattan handed the student a computer-printed receipt, showing that the student was the owner of the T-bill from the bank's point of view.

In this Federal Reserve transaction we have the essence of the hawala system, a system currently under frontal assault from the U.S. because it is efficient, low-cost, and unregulated. As in the hawala system, a person in Chicago (the student) goes to an agent (the Chicago bank) and asks for the transfer for something of value (the T-bill). Through a centralized record- keeping system (the Federal Reserve), value is transferred to an agent elsewhere (the bank in Manhattan) and given to a person at the remote location (in this case, the student again, but it could have been anyone). A typical hawala transaction in Dubai, here on the shore of the Persian (Arabian) Gulf, might go like this. Iqbal, a Pakistani working in the Jebel Ali Free Zone, gets paid in cash, in UAE dirhams. He wants to send money to his family in Karachi, so he goes to a hawaladar and gives him 5000 dirham. The hawaladar sends an email or a fax to his uncle in Karachi (who is also a hawaladar), along with an agreed code for collecting the money. Iqbal's wife picks up 80,000 rupees from the hawaladar in Karachi. The transaction is simple and efficient by comparison to most of the alternatives. Iqbal pays on one day and his wife picks up the money the next day. Iqbal doesn't need a bank account, no one asks him to fill out elaborate forms or show a government ID number. Nor does he need to deal with an artificial exchange rate set by the Pakistani central bank — a rate of exchange intended to rip off (tax) Pakistanis in foreign countries who are purchasing rupees with their repatriated earnings. Instead, the local hawaladar in Karachi deals on the white market and gets a market-determined exchange rate. (The central bank calls the free market in currencies a "black market," but since the market involves voluntary exchanges between individuals, it should be referred to as a "white market" — or maybe not, depending on your psychological associations with colors.)

Why does the system work? The hawaladars are reliable and trustworthy. As even Interpol observed, "the delivery associated with a hawala transaction is faster and more reliable than in bank transactions." And "the components of hawala that distinguish it from other remittance systems are trust and the extensive use of connections such as family relationships . . ." It takes honest people to run this "illegal" business.

Yet Time magazine has called hawala "a banking system built for terrorism." They accused Dubai of being the hub of the hawala business. But Time gave its game away by ominously noting: "Dubai is a free trade zone with no limitations on the movement of goods or currency."

Dubai, and the Persian Gulf generally, may be the last refuge of laissez-faire capitalism in the world. Yes, there are pockets elsewhere: Hong Kong seems to have survived the takeover by the PRC. And Costa Rica, for all the government's boast of offering a "cradle-to-grave" welfare state, probably is host to the largest percentage of self-proclaimed libertarians per capita of any country in the world. But it's hard to beat Dubai. Here you will find none of the war-mongering socialism of Iraq and Israel.

From the futuristic buildings lining Sheikh Zayed Road to the cozy gold, electronic, linen, you-name-it souks of Deira, this place rocks. I come in at midnight to my apartment overlooking the Gulf, and the Pakistani workers who are constructing a new shop on the ground floor are still hard at work. The main streets are wide, cabs are clean, people are courteous. Dubai has 28 five-star or better hotels, including the top-rated hotel in the world, the Burj Al Arab, which sits in the shape of a large dhow sail on a man-made island offshore, a sail 1000-feet (321 meters) tall, a ship eternally headed inland. There are the free zones of Jebel Ali, with the world's largest artificial port, and the more recent ones of Internet City and Media City. Dubai is about the size of Las Vegas, but a woman can safely walk alone at night pretty much anywhere. Here in Dubai we are living in a Golden Age, but one which, I suspect, will have disappeared in a decade because of U.S. big brother meddling.

No, everything is not perfect. By contrast to the 1990 census which showed that a majority of Dubai native Arabic women aged 15 to 19 were married, in 2000 over 90 percent were still single. That perhaps accounts for the annoying excess of nubile females running around — especially when you add into the picture those foreign beauties from Eastern Europe, Russia, the Philippines, and South Africa. Native Dubai Arabs comprise less than 25 percent of the population, with foreigners from India, Pakistan, the Philippines, South Africa, and a horde of European countries making up the rest. Signs are written in Arabic and English, with more English spoken than Arabic. Internet City has been invaded with the likes of Microsoft, Oracle, IBM, and Network Associates. Microsoft couldn't build a secure computer system if you held a gun to Bill Gate's head; Oracle's Larry Ellison is a fascist who wants to create a national ID database on all Americans; IBM has forgotten how to make a profit; and Network Associates has discontinued support for PGP. Who needs this kind of progress? With the beginning of the new International Financial Center over by the Emirates Tower (the tallest structure in the Middle East and Europe), we'll be seeing the likes of Merrill Lynch, NASDAQ, and Goldman Sachs.

There are other problems. The weekend is on the wrong days: Thursday and Friday, instead of the civilized Saturday and Sunday revealed to us by the Gods of Tom DeLay. And while you can smoke in pretty much any restaurant in Dubai, they have a small hang-up about alcohol. Since non-moslem tourists were believed to be desirous of having a pint now and then, hotels were hospitably given an alcohol monopoly — ordinary restaurants can't sell it. You can buy it at a store, but you have to get a license. I got a liquor license from the Dubai Police Department, but have yet to use it. I find that when I want a drink, I tend to wander over to one of the hotels down the street. Who do they think they are?

What is called hawala in Arabia, is also known as hundi in India and Pakistan, and havala in Iran. The word "hawala" comes from the Arabic root hwl, meaning to "change" or "transform". A traveler's check is called a hawala safir. The Arabic word "hawala" has been adopted into both Hindi (India) and Urdu (Pakistan). The alternative term hundi comes from a Sanskrit root meaning to "collect." A hundi operator is called a hundiwala (recall the dishwalas who sell satellite TV dishes out of corrugated tin shacks in India). In Farsi (Iran) the "w" is pronounced as a "v": havala. Farsi also uses the word saraf, meaning a "money changer" or "money remitter" (i.e. a hawala dealer).

A few days ago the Gulf News, a local Dubai English-language newspaper, carried a large ad: "HAWALA IS ILLEGAL, DON'T RISK IT!" Now, hawala is not illegal here: the ad was referring to the illegality of persons in India receiving hawala payments from Dubai. Because the Indian central bank has said hawala violates exchange control laws. The ad luridly carried two newspaper headline clippings: "US tells India to regularize hawala transactions" and "US treasury nudges India to tackle hawala networks". And who was it that took out the ad, all in great concern and alarm that Indians in Dubai might send money to the folks back home in New Delhi, and upset the poor little U.S. Treasury? Western Union. A rival money-transmitting business. The ad represents the classic case of a business attempting to use government regulation as a whip to drive out the competition. (Click here to see the ad.) What is most absurd about the whole thing is Western Union's invoking of U.S. meddling in India as a behavorial guide for expatriate Indians living in Dubai.

Of course Western Union is just another hawala-type business. In the old days, you took cash to a Western Union office in one city, and had them "telegraph it" to a Western Union office in another city. What happened was the Western Union office in the first city put the cash in its safe. Then they sent a telegram to the second office, with the message: "Give so-and-so this much cash." The thing that moved between the two cities was not the cash, but rather a message that described the value transfer that was to take place in the remote location. Today Western Union maintains bank accounts, and if they need more cash in one place they take it out of the bank. If they have a cash surplus in another place, they take the cash to the local bank, and then send a wire to the place the cash is needed.

The only thing that distinguishes Western Union from hawala is that Western Union is regulated in India. And they are quite happy to help the Indian central bank rip off expatriate Indians by selling them too few rupees for their foreign-earned dirhams, dollars, and other currencies. This, then, is what makes Western Union a great patriot and supporter of the U.S. Treasury.

The first paragraph of the Time article mentioned above, "A Banking System Built for Terrorism" (Oct. 5, 2001), paints a sinister picture: "In the labrynthine depths of old Delhi, where the lanes are too narrow even for a rickshaw, men drink tea and chat in shabby offices. Nobody seems to be doing any work, until the phone rings. Then, numbers are furiously scribbled, followed by some busy dialing and whispered instruction. Although it's far from obvious in the innocuous setting, these men are moving money — to exporters, drug traffickers, tax evaders, corrupt politicians. And terrorists."

Let's rewrite this paragraph, shall we? "In the labrynthine depths of a nondescript floor in Manhattan's Citibank tower, where the aisles between cubicles are too narrow even for a rickshaw, men sip coffee long since gone cold and stale, and chat among themselves across their shabby partitions. Nobody seems to be doing any work, until the phone rings. Then, numbers are furiously scribbled, followed by some busy dialing, whispered instruction, and tapping at the computer keyboard. Although it's far from obvious in the innocuous setting, these men are moving money — to exporters, drug traffickers, tax evaders, corrupt politicians. And terrorists."

Clearly it's time to shut down Citibank.

New page

==Before you download Tor==
For more info, see the guide on the official Tor website: https://www.torproject.org/docs/verifying-signatures.html.en

To follow this guide, one of these three programs should be used:

GNU Privacy Assistant—comes with the GPG binary package for almost every platform. It is usually found in the same directory as the gpg command.*Kleopatra—comes with GnuPG4win (http://gpg4win.org). It has a more pleasant interface, but is more prone to crashing. It should be available in the Quick Start menu after the program is installed.*gpg via command-line interface—always available, but slightly more cumbersome and error-prone. On most systems, go to a command prompt and type the gpg command. On Windows, the command is placed in the %SystemDrive%\Progra~1\GNU\GnuPG\pub directory after it is installed.

Most Tor binary executable packages are signed by Erinn Clark and can be verified using her PGP public key.

Obtain the PGP public key
The public key can be obtained through one of several ways:
Retrieving it from a keyserver
It is easiest just to use hkp://keys.gnupg.net which is the default keyserver. The fingerprint of Erinn’s public key is 8738 A680 B84B 3031 A630 F2DB 416F 0610 63FE E659. Her key ID is 0x followed by the last 8 characters of the fingerprint – namely, 0x63FEE659.
GNU Privacy Assistant:
In the Key Manager, click the Preferences button (or select it from the Edit menu). The address hkp://keys.gnupg.net should be filled in the Default keyserver field. Click OK.
Click the Server menu and select Retrieve keys. A small dialog box should pop up. Input 0x63FEE659 for Key ID. Click OK.
If the key is found, it will be automatically imported to your keyring.
Kleopatra:
Click the Settings menu and select Configure Kleopatra. When the Configure window comes up, go to the Directory Services section. You should see “hkp://keys.gnupg.net” listed with the scheme “hkp” and the “OpenGPG” box checked. Click OK.
With the main window in focus, click the Lookup Certificates on Server button (with a picture of binoculars), or select it from the File menu. The Certificate Lookup window should pop up.
Input 0x63FEE659 in the Find field and click Search.
If the key is found, select it and click Import to import it to your keyring.
Command line:
Type gpg --keyserver hkp://keys.gnupg.net --recv-keys 0x63fee659

Obtaining Erinn's key in person
This is considered the most secure, although she is an individual and cannot always give out her key to the thousands of people who use Tor regularly.
Since Erinn is a Debian developer, you might be able to meet her at a free software, open source software, or Linux IT conference. Hopefully there will be a sign somewhere displaying a hardcopy of her key. In that case, you can transcribe it to a keyfile (see below). If not, then maybe you can agree on another way to transfer it (such as a key-signing party).

Importing the key from a keyfile
Generally, the keyfile is obtained either in person (see above), by asking someone else to export it from a keyring (gpg --export -a 0x63fee659 > erinn_clark.asc), through a dedicated URL (for example, http://www.cacert.org/certs/cacert.asc) or by copying-and-pasting from a webpage (for example, http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/checking-gpg-signature.html).

There is a keyfile at http://deb.torproject.org/archive-key.asc which is used to verify the checksums of the Debian and Ubuntu GNU/Linux versions of Tor and Vidalia. For other operating systems (such as Windows or Mac OS), the key must be obtained using another method.

Once the user has a keyfile, the key may be imported in the following manner:
GNU Privacy Assistant:
In the Key Manager, click the Import button. A file selector should pop up.
Locate the file then click Open. The key should be automatically imported.
Kleopatra:
Drag-and-drop the file into the main window. A context menu pops up. Choose Import Certificates, or
Click the Import Certificates button, or select it from the File menu. A file selector should pop up.
Locate the file then click Open. The key should be automatically imported.
Command line:
Type gpg --import followed by the name of the signature file and press <ENTER>. A modern console emulator will allow you to drag-and-drop the file instead of typing out its name.

Double-check the key's fingerprint
You will do this by physically reading it.
GNU Privacy Assistant:
In the Key Manager, click the Key ID column to sort the keys numerically by ID.
Scroll until you reach an item with ID number 63FEE659. It should have the name Erinn Clark <erinn@torproject.org>.
Select that item.
In the Details tab below, you should see a row that says Key ID: 63FEE659.
Check that the row below it says: Fingerprint: 8738 A680 B84B 3031 A630 F2DB 416F 0610 63FE E659
Kleopatra:
After importing the key, it should be listed in a new tab named Imported Certificates. If not, then open a new tab with the “All Certificates” option.
Look for an item with Key-ID 63FEE659.
Get the key's properties by either:
Double-clicking the item,
Right clicking the item and choosing Certificate Details, or
Selecting the item, going to the View menu, then selecting Certificate Details
Command line:
Type gpg --fingerprint 0x63fee659
Check that the program prints the following:

pub 2048R/63FEE659 2003-10-16
Key fingerprint = 8738 A680 B84B 3031 A630 F2DB 416F 0610 63FE E659
Particularly if you have any material to cover any of the FIXMEs found in the text, please email me. If you are someone who needs confidential anonymity advice or assistance, do NOT use my mailvault GPG key, since I have no control over preventing leakage of the passphrase. Instead, use this key. While mailvault is not located inside the USA (and thus not subject to the most likely form of assault: a National Security Letter), it is not outside the question that they could be coerced in some other manner. If you are unfamiliar with GPG, you may consider installing a graphical front end to help you along.</ins>
